In the heart of Century City, close to attractions such as Canal Walk Shopping Centre, Ratanga Junction Theme park and opposite the Century City conference centre, is the contemporary Century City Hotel. With rich, warm and modern interiors as well as panoramic views of Century City, I couldn’t help but feel like I’d been transported to New York City during my three day, three night stay.
On arrival we were welcomed by the very friendly and professional reception staff. I was instantly drawn in by the high ceilings and modern, open plan interior design that lead from the foyer to the lounge/Square Café and Wine Bar.
We were upgraded from a superior room to one of the five executive rooms, which are slightly larger than the superior room with a king-sized bed that can be converted into two twin beds, an Eames lounge chair for relaxing while taking in the panoramic view of Century City.
The executive room also has the following to make your stay a little bit more comfortable:
- Open-air cupboards
- Block-out curtains which had me sleeping in late every morning, which is perfect for jet-lagged travellers to get some well-deserved sleep.
- Deep and spacious drawers and a laptop-sized safe for storage.
- Workstation with plug points and a USB port, which is great if you forgot your two-point plug. This is the first hotel I have stayed in that has offered this amenity.
- Bedside table and a USB port.
- 40-inch LCD screen with 19 DStv channels.
- Refreshment station with tea and coffee making facilities.
- 1800-watt hair dryer
Whether travelling for work or leisure, you will be happy to know that the hotel offers 200 Mbps fibre connection with unlimited Wi-Fi access during your stay, which made my life so easy because I was able to catch up on work between enjoying the pure bliss of the modern hotel.
The last fine detail that all my green readers will love is that the hotel uses recycled water for all the toilets as a going green measure.
My overall room experience was very pleasant and peaceful, and need I say, the hotel is extremely quiet. We couldn’t hear a thing at night. It was really a great and peaceful environment. Room service and housekeeping kept our room immaculate and were quick to bring up anything we needed.
Food and drinks: The Square Café Menu:
Situated on the ground floor of the hotel is The Square Café & Wine Bar which caters breakfast, lunch and dinner for both guests and visitors.
A beautiful, open-plan space with a lovely outside veranda that overlooks other restaurants and cafes. The candles placed on each table create a lovely warm ambience at night.
Breakfast: 06:30–10:30 during the week and 07:00–11:00 on weekends, which is great for sleeping in a bit later.
On all three mornings, we indulged in the beautifully presented and scrumptious full breakfast buffet that serves both hot and cold options to both.
The Square Café & Wine Bar is also one of the first restaurants to offer a self-help coffee station for all hotel guests, perfect for on-the-go coffees. The Square Café & Wine Bar also serves the Hausbrandt blend coffee for hotel guests all morning with breakfast. If you are a tea lover like myself you are in for a treat with the Ronnefeldt brand, one of the oldest tea companies in the world. You can only expect the finest pleasure with every sip.
Dinner: 17:30–22:30 Monday – Sunday A la carte menu
The menu offers seafood, pork, vegetarian, fish and red meat options. I generally prefer a shorter menu with about 5 to 6 options with lunch and dinner options including platters. Each dish on the menu is explained in detail with a drink to pair it with, which is very well thought out. We tried something different on each night, and each dish was truly amazing and beautifully presented.
On all three nights our waiter, Thando, was delightful, often recommending meals and constantly checking up on us to see that everything was okay. I always feel like Miranda from Devil Wears Prada when reviewing hotels and restaurants because the staff are sometimes a bit nervous. But not Thando, she is a little feisty one.
Staff and service
From the minute I arrived at the Century City Hotel, the staff made me feel extremely welcomed and were so professional and helpful throughout my stay.
At first I thought it’s too good to be true and probably only because I was there for a review. But it was clear that the managers and staff treated all the hotel guests and visitors equally.
My Overall experience:
I have to honestly give the Century City Hotel a 5-star rating for the three days and three nights I had with them. I can highly recommend the hotel for corporate and leisure guests. The hotel caters for everyone and has friendly and professional staff.
The Square Café & Wine Bar is also a great restaurant for day time visitors and has daily specials.
