Working from home sounds like a dream for many office workers. The idea of spending your 9-5’s in the comfort of your own home, perhaps even surrounded by your pets and children, does have a lot of advantages – but there are pitfalls to it as well. By preparing your home office in advance and getting in the right mindset, however, you might be able to be just as productive as you were at the office. Perhaps even more productive.
Here is a handful of great ideas on how you can prepare yourself and your new office beforehand.
Make a list of everything you need
When you’re in an actual office, you already have access to whatever supplies and support you may need during the day. Although you think all you need is your trusted laptop and your own good head in order to get the work done, you’d be surprised at how much you actually need.
Make a list of what you know you need, such as a desk and an ergonomic chair, and tick this off before you start to do anything else. You know best what you need in your office, so try to think about what you used to have in your previous workspace and what you’d use every day. As an artist, you may need some more space for your artwork, for example, or even an upgraded Internet if your work depends on it.

The biggest problems with home offices are, of course, procrastination and noise. Choose somewhere away from the main traffic of your home, such as the hallway and the kitchen, and remember to make it as convenient as possible if you’re expecting clients to come over. A spare bedroom, for example, would make the perfect home office.
A home office may be comfortable and a lot more relaxing than a regular office, but it is easy to fall into a rut. Make an honest attempt at working throughout the hours, however, and don’t allow yourself to get distracted, and you’ll never look back.
