If you are a hiring people to work for you and your business, then you want to make sure that you are hiring the people that are going to help your business to really grow. They are the backbone to the business and ultimately will be the people that are able to put the business plan in motion, and have the passion and drive to see it all through. It is a pretty competitive job market out there, so you are able to give yourself time to make sure that you are recruiting the people that are going to help your business, as well as those that you can help to grow and develop in their careers. But what are the kinds of things that you are looking for in an employee?
You may be recruiting right away and know who you are looking for as part of your business? But even if you’re not recruiting at the moment, having a plan in place, as well as knowing what you are going to be looking for when the time does come around to recruit, will make the whole process go much more smoothly. There is no time like the present to be ready for all that you want to do in the business and getting ready for the people that can help you to take the business to the next level. So here are some of the things that you can be looking for in the people that you recruit, so that you have the people that are going to help the business to grow.
The internet is a really powerful tool and if the people that are applying to work for you have an online presence, then it gives you some information that you can use to find and then learn more about them. You can get an idea about the places that they have worked from their online presence, as well as if they are likely to be a good fit with the other people that work in the office environment. It also shows that kind of person they are, as you can find out some of their interests, especially if they have a presence on sites like LinkedIn or if they have a blog of their own. So look for this kind of thing when they apply and use the information wisely.
Having confidence isn’t all about being the loudest and most talkative person in the room, though that can occasionally be a measure. But looking for employees that are confident in themselves can be just what you need. This shows that they know what they are about, they know what they are good at, and they know where they want their career to lead to. While it can be a good idea to discuss weaknesses at an interview, recruiting someone that is quite down on themselves can be tough when you work in a positive and progressive work environment. So look for those with self-confidence and it can help be a boost to your business.
Eagerness To Learn
There will be some job roles and some industries that are going to require specific qualifications, and that is all well and good. But when you are looking for people to recruit for your business, being able to see how much learning and formal education they have had can say a lot about them. It can show that they have an eagerness to learn and are willing to do so. There are things that they could be doing and that is ongoing, or they may have undertaken master of computer science online programs to further their knowledge and make them more employable, for example. If people are making more of an effort to be employable and to improve, then it can be a good sign for their work ethic and how hardworking they can be.
The good thing about inviting someone for an interview is that you can get to know them and ask them questions, which is much more than you will be able to learn from just looking at their resume. And one of the questions that you should be asking id for them to talk about times in their work or career where they have had to demonstrate adaptability. The reason being is that work and business can change quickly or not go according to plan, for a variety of different reasons. But if they can demonstrate how they have thought on their feet and have shown that they can be adaptable and flexible, then it will make a massive difference to the impact that they can have in the business, especially if it means that you don’t have to ‘hand-hold’ too much.
A resume is essentially a long list of the things that people have done in their life and career until now. And there will be some things that will stand out on the list more than others, especially when it comes to helping others. If they have been able to demonstrate how much they have been able to help others in their life, then it says a lot about them. This is probably the kind of person that you want working for you over those that don’t. So of course, invite them to interview if everything else ticks the boxes. But it can be a good sign if they are a helpful and kind person.
Playing the Part
There is only one chance to make a first impression. And for job interviews, this can start right from the time a resume or application is submitted. But when it comes to interview, you want to see that the potential employee can look the part and be a good asset to the business. Are they well groomed and are they being careful about the language that they use around you? What is their body language saying about them? This can all play a part in what they would be like in the work environment. As them questions about the business and what they have learned about it, as this can show how committed they are and how prepared they have come to the interview; it does make a difference. So although someone doesn’t need to be all work all of the time, showing that they can be professional when needed is a really good thing.
In a similar vein, being able to check that they have come to the interview prepared is a really good thing. This can be how they are dressed, as well as doing their research on you and the business. Can they answer some basic questions about the business? It can also be a good idea to look at their general knowledge on the industry. Are there recent trends or technologies that you can talk to them about? A potential employee that keeps up with the times and stays relevant within the industry that they are applying for is going to be a better employee than those that don’t stay up to date and read up on things in their spare time. So ask them questions that will show how much preparation they have done.
There are many questions that you can ask people at interview to see what kind of person that are and what kind of person they will be in the workforce. It can be a good idea to also ask about things that they have done in life that has pushed them out of their comfort zone. This can be a really interesting question with some really interesting answers. To get ahead in life and in business, it can take getting out of your comfort zone. So if the candidate can show that they have done things that make them a little bit uncomfortable, but that have helped them to grow and develop, can be a really good thing. It shows the kind of person that they are and that they can and will take risks, if they can talk about the ways that they have pushed themselves out of their normal comfort zone.
Do They Follow Advice?
Asking for help and then taking advice can be hard things for people to do. It can be pride that stops people from doing that, even if they need to do it. But if you can ask candidates about times that they have asked for help or taken advice, then it can show a lot about the kind of person that they are. It shows that they are able to take advice and learn from people that have ‘been there’ and ‘done that’ before them. This can be a good thing in the workplace when they will need to ask for help, as well as when they will need to help others too.
Have you done much interviewing before? Being prepared and knowing what to look for in the candidates can be a really good thing. It would be great to hear what you think.
